Thoughts after a few chapters: This book is the ultimate crap. I thought, “Really? I’m sure it can’t be THAT bad,” but let me tell you: it was THAT bad. I was surprised by how negative a lot of the reviewers were. I did a little reading on Goodreads to know the community’s reaction to the book. Who doesn’t want that kind of cover? I can stare at it for hours. I instantly fell in love with the cover! I think IF I didn’t know any better, this would be an all-out cover buy. *Cover illustration © 2010 by Nico Jonker | Cover design by Rich Deas But the angels’ mission is urgent, and dark forces are threatening. In the dystopian ' Rollingwood,' a divorced father struggles to take care of his ill infant, as his ex-wife and colleagues try to render him irrelevant. By turns hilarious and heartfelt, dark and illuminative, Ben Marcus'sLeaving the Seais a ground breaking collection of stories from one of the single most vital, extraordinary, and unique writers of his generation. In the heartfelt ' I Can Say Many Nice Things,' a washed-up writer toying with infidelity leads a creative writing workshop on board a cruise ship. Isn't that the depiction of a vengeful and wrathful God? Is the satire on how often godliness and wickedness coincide? Well, apparently the original novel was intended as a feminist manifesto (even though the women are represented as actual witches), but there isn't much in the way of theological commentary, so I don't know what to make of book or film. Is Daryl a Satan proxy or a God proxy? Daryl rants about how he gave the girls everything, and then when they forsake him, he will seek retribution. Upon learning that this movie was adapted from a novel by John Updike, a writer I admire, I expected the hijinx to lead to something deeper. The trio of women gets their revenge through sorcery, but they still raise Daryl's lovechildren and treat him as merely an exasperating, absentee father rather than quashing his sacrilegious doctrine, defeating him for good, or at least spurning him for the Satan proxy he is. Cher, Sarandon, and Pfeiffer are brassy, sensual, and sweet, respectively, and Jack Nicholson is the epitome of the diabolical wag.ĭaryl van Horne spouts some base misogyny, which has the potential to be clever and satirical if only there were some wink at the audience. Three headstrong single women in idyllic Eastwick wish for their dream beaux, and a devilish new stranger comes to town to seduce them in turn. Books like The Bell Jar Girl, Interrupted, by Susanna Kayseįor those looking for books similar to The Bell Jar, Susanna Kaysen's 1993 novel Girl, Interrupted, which is perhaps best known for its 1999 feature-film adaptation, is a great place to begin.Ī young Susanna Kaysen chronicles her struggle with depression and borderline personality disorder in this poignant memoir set in the 1960s. These eight titles are excellent starting points if you're looking for books that are similar to The Bell Jar. Plath's tragic death came just a few months after the original publication of her novel, but she has had a lasting impact on the literary community. Despite the fact that Plath's novel and writing have certainly inspired many writers, it can be difficult to find books like The Bell Jar that so expertly portray what it is like to live with a mental illness. One of the best depictions of mental illness in literature currently published is the novel, which compares the crippling feeling of depression to suffocating under a bell jar. After Plath's suicide in 1963, The Bell Jar became a semi-autobiographical account of Plath's personal struggles with depression and bipolar disorder while she was a young woman. The second sub-plot includes Lizzie’s interactions with Nathan Drayle, her master/husband-figure - whom she simply calls, “Drayle.” I was leery of the confidence Lizzie had in him and felt her misplaced trust would come back to bite her. Henry and George round out the group of male slaves - with the dimensions of Phillip’s character being the most developed. Phillip, another slave from the Drayle plantation, accompanies his master on the annual vacations as well. The first sub-plot centers around Lizzie and her summer friends from other plantations, Reenie, Sweet, and Mawu. The storyline consists of two sub-plots and vacillates between activities at the Ohio resort and the Drayle plantation in Tennessee. The story opens in media res during the summer of 1852 - the slaves’ second summer at the resort. The story covers three summers during the middle of the 19th century at a resort then known as the Tawawa House - which later became Ohio Africa University - which was ultimately named Wilberforce University - near Xenia, Ohio. There were so many great scenes, I would be hard pressed to pick one that stood out above the rest. The author takes the time to establish the characters in a way that blends subtlety with humour, and their interactions are fascinating to observe. Excellently written, excellently read (of course!), and a thoroughly romping listen. As a successor to Agatha Christie's Miss Marple, she is certainly very recognisable to most modern readers, and her transformation from waspish business owner to respected country-dweller is at least as interesting as the tale of her investigations into the death of a local husband. The first Agatha Raisin, 'lady detective', novel establishes Agatha as a newcomer to the English countryside, vacillating about staying, and surprising herself by making new friends and becoming actually popular for the first time in her pushy, go-getting, high-flying life. What made the experience of listening to Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death the most enjoyable?
